Every week you sit is a week you do not get paid
You know exactly what your status says. Prohibited. And you know what it means, because your dispatcher told you, or the recruiter told you, or the Clearinghouse told you when you logged in yourself.
Here is what that one word is actually costing you.
Your truck is parked and your income stopped.
No safety-sensitive function. No driving. No pre-trip, no fueling, no supervising a load. A driver averaging $1,400 a week loses roughly $5,600 a month sitting in prohibited status. Most drivers we talk to have already burned through savings by the time they call.

This is the part drivers miss. Since November 18, 2024, your state licensing agency is required to strip the commercial privileges off your license while you sit in prohibited status. That is a downgrade to a regular driver's license. Getting the CDL back means completing the return-to-duty process and then applying for reinstatement with your state. Employers have to query the Clearinghouse before they hire and once a year after. There is no version of this where you quietly move to another carrier and start over. The record follows you until the process is finished.

That pressure pushes drivers into two bad decisions: picking whatever SAP the carrier hands them without comparing, or stalling because the whole thing feels too big to start.
The drivers who get back to work are not the ones with the cleanest record. They are the ones who started the Return to Duty Process.
The five steps from prohibited to driving
Reset Road handles steps 1 through 3. Steps 4 and 5 run through your employer, and we tell you exactly what to ask for so nothing stalls.
Initial evaluation
You meet your SAP in-person or over video. It runs about 60. Your SAP asks about your history, your test, and your circumstances, then determines what education or treatment you need.
Treatment or education
Your SAP writes a plan and gives you a list of qualified providers to choose from. Some drivers get an education course they can finish in less than a week. Others get a treatment program that runs longer.
SAP follow-up evaluation
When you finish your plan, you meet your SAP again. The SAP verifies you completed what was assigned, determines whether you are compliant, and if you are, sets your follow-up testing schedule.
Return-to-duty test
This one is on your employer. Your current or hiring carrier arranges a directly observed return-to-duty test and reports the negative result to the Clearinghouse.
Follow-up testing schedule
Your SAP prescribes at least six unannounced tests in your first 12 months back on the job, and can extend the schedule up to five years total. Your employer runs those tests and reports completion.
Understanding Your FMCSA Clearinghouse Status
For CDL and CLP holders, the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse makes the return to duty process different from many other DOT regulated occupations. A drug or alcohol violation can place a driver in prohibited status, which means the driver cannot perform DOT safety sensitive functions, including operating a commercial motor vehicle. Completing a SAP evaluation is an important part of resolving that status, but it is not the only step required before a driver can return to safety sensitive work.
Your Clearinghouse record also helps show where you are in the process. After you select and designate a DOT qualified Substance Abuse Professional, the SAP conducts an initial evaluation and develops recommendations for education or treatment based on your individual circumstances. The SAP reports the date of the initial assessment to the Clearinghouse. After you complete the recommendations and satisfy the follow up evaluation requirements, the SAP reports that you are eligible to take a return to duty test. These are the two SAP milestones recorded in the Clearinghouse.
Being eligible for a return to duty test is not the same as having a not prohibited Clearinghouse status. The return to duty test is a separate step that occurs after the SAP determines you are eligible. A current employer or other appropriate regulated party must arrange the required return to duty test. Once the required negative result is reported to the Clearinghouse, the driver can move from prohibited to not prohibited status and may become eligible to resume safety sensitive functions. This distinction is important because completing the SAP portion alone does not automatically change a drivers Clearinghouse status.
There is also work to complete after returning to safety sensitive duties. Your SAP creates an individualized follow up testing plan that requires at least six unannounced tests during the first twelve months after returning to safety sensitive work. Additional testing may be required for a longer period depending on the SAPs determination. The actual follow up testing schedule is not stored in the Clearinghouse. Instead, the responsible employer carries out the testing requirements and reports successful completion of the plan when applicable.
